Earth Overshoot Day Has Arrived

08.01.2018

Today, August 1, is Earth Overshoot Day—the day in which all of humanity has used more from nature than it can produce in the entire year.

Overshoot Day Coverage:

This number has been growing steadily since 1969, according to the Global Footprint Network. In 1969, Earth Overshoot Day occurred right around the new year, nearly hitting the mark for sustainable usage of natural resources. However, since 2010, humanity has used approximately 1.7 Earths worth of resources with Earth Overshoot Day occurring at the beginning of August.

When looking at individual countries, the numbers are more dire. A majority of first world countries have overshot their use of natural resources by mid-June of this year. America leads the pack, overshooting their resources by March 15, 2018, and Canada follows close behind with an overshoot day of March 18.

Being aware of the issues is the first step towards change, however. Throughout today, i+s will be providing links and information on sustainable measures designers can take. Together we can turn back the clock.
