CHICAGO— The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and InterfaceFLOR are pleased to announce the winners of the ninth annual IIDA Student Sustainable Design Competition. The competition was created to celebrate and encourage sustainable design, and to award individuals who demonstrated consistent, creative incorporation and the understanding of sustainable principles.
“The IIDA Student Sustainable Design Competition helps promote and create awareness of design strategies that reduce negative impacts on our environment,” says Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA, executive vice president and CEO of IIDA. “It’s crucial for students to learn what materials are most effective for sustainable design solutions and the scope of submissions proved that sustainability is a global concern.”
IIDA received strong submissions from students enrolled in design programs from around the globe. More than 15,000 people voted for their favorite project for the People’s Choice Award from over 15 different countries including Canada, China, Macedonia, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, United Kingdom and Virgin Islands.
First place was awarded to Katie Goodman, Student IIDA; Liz Kahn, Student IIDA; Jennifer Madden, Student IIDA; and Sarah Martin, Student IIDA of Drexel University for their project “Drexel SmartHouse.” The team received a $1,500 cash prize and will be featured on the IIDA Student Blog and the IIDA website.
The second place winner was Micaela Silva Merea, Student IIDA, from University of Texas at San Antonio for the design project “Link Oil & Gas,” who was awarded a $1,000 cash prize.
