All of Tarkett’s North American Plants Now ISO-Certified

CHAGRIN FALLS, OHIO – In an effort to extend sustainable practices beyond traditional post-consumer product use, Tarkett North America, provider of the world’s most integrated high-performance flooring systems, recently announced that all its North

American plants, including those from its Johnsonite company, have received ISO 14001:2004 certification. Through this certification, the company demonstrates its ongoing commitment to effective environmental management and resource stewardship.

ISO 14001:2004 is an international standard developed to set out the requirements for an Environmental Management System (EMS). Its key criteria include: prevention of pollution, continual improvement and compliance with national and local regulations.

The process begins with a regulatory compliance assessment and an evaluation of the organization's environmental impacts and aspects. This assessment leads to detailed projects, which tackle pressing issues and shifts into practices of ongoing improvement.

While ISO provides a holistic framework for environmental policymaking, it is up to individual companies to develop specific and strategic ways of meeting the requirements. Tarkett and Johnsonite have taken this responsibility seriously.

“Each of our plants uses local and national standards to ensure the highest rate of efficiency and resource stewardship. To have all Tarkett factories in North America ISO 14001 certified is a great accomplishment and shows the dedication and hard work of our team to ensure that our corporate philosophy of better resource stewardship is not only met, but exceeded,” says Diane Martel, vice president of environmental planning and strategy for Tarkett North America.

External auditors who review the functions and successes of the EMS carry out the final certification, but the process for implementation begins much earlier on in the company’s sustainability story, from product research and development to effective factory planning strategies.

As a part of a larger global commitment to resource stewardship, Tarkett employs processes and systems in its manufacturing facilities above and beyond the requirements of the environmental management system. Tarkett has six manufacturing plants in North America, which include: Houston; Florence, AL; Middlefield, Ohio; Chagrin Falls, Ohio; Waterloo, Ontario; and Farnham, Quebec.
