CHICAGO – Flos, the renowned Italian lighting design company, is proud to announce the recognition of the Kelvin LED, designed by Antonio Citterio with Toan Nguyen, and Light Spring, designed by Ron Gilad, in the 2011 GOOD DESIGN Awards. Founded in Chicago in 1950 by architects Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., GOOD DESIGN bestows international recognition upon the world's most prominent designers and manufacturers for advancing new, visionary, and innovative product concepts, invention and originality, and for stretching the envelope beyond what is considered ordinary product and consumer design.
A table lamp which perfectly marries formal considerations with innovative technology, the Kelvin LED exudes sophistication and style in both ultra-modern and traditional settings. Form meets function in this avant-garde object that draws on in-depth technical research, advanced light optimization and energy-saving studies. Kelvin LED has a square polycarbonate body with thirty 2700K Top LEDs, producing a total of 270 lumens. The LED diffuser provides the lamp with excellent duration and efficiency. An archetype for the table lamps of the future, the Kelvin LED, although new, has already made a name for itself as one of the 'classic' models in the Flos catalog.
Light Spring forms part of a series of wall lamps which feature a very simple and linear design and a die-cast, painted tubular aluminum body. Light Spring is an excellent example of how to combine the latest lighting technology with aesthetic and design research. The design of this wall lamp unites formal minimalism with the remarkable lighting capacity of power LEDs. The result is an elegant sconce light that is reminiscent of the candelabras of the past, reinterpreted from a modern point of view.
"Flos is honored to be recognized with two 2011 GOOD DESIGN Awards. Two magnificent additions to the Flos catalog have won this year. Citterio's Kelvin LED is already a classic, beauty meets functionality; it fits every desk from corporate to an antique table in the home. Gilad's Light Spring is poetry for your home using the latest LED technology," says Jan Vingerhoets, CEO of Flos USA.
Now in its 61st year, the GOOD DESIGN Awards remains the oldest and most recognized program for design excellence worldwide, conferred annually by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design together with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. In November, the judges met and selected over 500 product designs and graphics from over 35 nations based on innovation, form, materials and construction, concept, function, utility, and aesthetic appeal. The Flos products will be featured with other award recipients on the Chicago Athenaeum website at www.chi-athenaeum.org.
