NEW YORK --Humanscale’s Horizon LED task light, designed by Peter Stathis and Michael McCoy, has earned a much-coveted Spark: Pro Award at the Spark level, which is the highest level attainable from the Spark Design & Architecture Awards.
Spark is a unique design competition because it is multi-disciplinary, reflecting the fact that most of today’s designers work on teams in this fashion. Spark is also multi-level or “one for all,” meaning it seeks out the best designs from all levels of society, from beginners to the most experienced. Each Spark competition uses a new, international jury, covering a full spectrum of design disciplines, media, educators and experts.
In reflecting on the high caliber of both the entrants and the jury this year, Spark Founder Peter Kuchnicki says, “This year…the work was of a very high caliber overall. This makes it quite difficult to judge, but each and every design was considered, debated and discussed. The jury followed an expert leader in each discipline from entry to entry, as the debate proceeded. Personally, this was one of the most balanced, well thought-out and deliberative jury process I have been blessed to witness.”
A visually striking fusion of form and function, Horizon represents the first utilization of Thin Film LED Technology in a task light. Horizon overcomes the weaknesses of conventional LED task lights by offering brilliant 3000K illumination and excellent light distribution in a slender profile. With a Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 80, Horizon uses a number of high-intensity micro LEDs that surround several layers of polycarbonate and optical films to create an ultra-wide footprint of warm, glare-free light that casts only one shadow on the work surface. In addition, Horizon’s built-in dimmer control offers seven settings for dimmability, providing both energy savings and customizable levels of illumination. This Spark Award marks the latest in Horizon’s long list of design accolades, including a prestigious Red Dot Award for its sophisticated technology and stunning form.
The Spark Celebration, which is dedicated to the design community and honors the entrants and winners of the Spark Design & Architecture Awards, will be held in San Francisco, Calif. on October 21.
