Inspired by New York’s street and food culture, Le District is a new neighborhood marketplace set to open in early 2015 at Brookfield Place in Lower Manhattan. HPH restaurant group tapped New York-based experiential design firm ICRAVE to transform the 37,000-square-foot space into a vibrant destination for guests to shop, eat, and play.
ICRAVE’s design concept explores the crossroads of diversity within the city’s neighborhoods in a one-stop food market and dining destination on the Hudson River waterfront in Lower Manhattan.
“When we saw the opportunity with the client to do such a large scale intervention there on the streetscape we thought about what kind of activation and use this program could have and how it could transform the neighborhood,” said Lionel Ohayon, president of ICRAVE. “For us it was much more [about] its impact on the urban landscape ... and what it means to live in that neighborhood than it was about conceptualizing a French place. So the values that we were looking for were really based on the principles of urban planning and about how you’d make a neighborhood.”
Going beyond a traditional neighborhood bodega, ICRAVE’s design encourages guests to discover, browse, and engage in an experience full of unexpected surprises and curated goods. Throughout the four main “districts”—which include a local market, cafe, market hall, and restaurant section—both the local community and visiting tourists will enjoy everything from a cheese station with private tasting rooms, to grand outdoor dining terraces facing the North Cove Marina.
With panoramic views of the Statue of Liberty, the expansive French‐inspired culinary destination sets the stage for local Lower Manhattan residents, business professionals, and tourists alike to enjoy an active urban market.
