Is District Cooling Right for Your Campus?

A new ASHRAE guide identifies ideal candidates

District cooling systems serve applications like cities, educational campuses, major healthcare facilities, and other large building complexes. But to be successful, their components must be designed to function as a properly integrated system.

When correctly planned and executed, district cooling offers many efficiency, economic, and environmental benefits, says Gary Phetteplace, lead author of ASHRAE’s new District Cooling Guide.

Because district cooling requires large investments, the systems must have long lifetimes and remain efficient in order to recover the capital. In addition to design and financial guidance, the book also includes system enhancements such as the integration of thermal energy storage.

Operation and maintenance are also essential, so the guide provides real-life case studies to ensure your installation is successful.
