BuildingsXchange: A Model For Better Business

 

The challenges of adapting innovative business processes and applying new technologies to the business of buildings are never easy. Making real changes – and a difference in your organization – requires your insight, communication, diligence, and at times, a leap of faith. It’s not often you get a chance to step back for a moment and take a fresh – and undistracted – look at the way you do business in order to do better business.

At press time, the staff at Stamats Buildings Media Inc., publisher of Buildings magazine and creator of Buildings.com, just returned from its long-anticipated and groundbreaking strategic buying event: BuildingsXchange. Over a three-day period, facilities executives like you, who have strategic procurement responsibilities, met one-on-one with senior executives from leading vendor companies in concise, uninterrupted meetings with pre-determined agendas. With months of planning, one of the goals of BuildingsXchange is to partner up buyers and sellers prior to the event as much as possible, so that when they meet in private, confidential sessions they can get right down to business.

This first-ever BuildingsXchange focused on energy management and engineered systems. Senior management representatives from major development/ownership/facilities management organizations, corporate and institutional real estate departments, and government agencies took that leap of faith with us to interface with their senior-level counterparts in vendor companies. Participants discussed a wide range of solutions for the unique challenges they face in their new construction, modernization, and operational endeavors.

The result? The event exceeded everyone’s expectations.

One attendee, the senior vice president at a leading developer/owner/construction management company, explained it succinctly: “My expectations coming into this event were two-fold. My first expectation was to be challenged in my thinking and my way of approaching our business … Coming out here, I told myself I’d be thinking outside the box a bit. Tak[ing] a fresh look at the way we do things. So this was the opportunity to explore new ground and connect with folks … and after one day, that expectation has been met.”

We were fortunate to have engaged some of the most forward-thinking facilities organizations to participate – professionals who looked to this event as an opportunity to compress their vendor evaluation cycles and build and solidify their list of preferred vendors. These innovators are eagerly anticipating next year’s event, scheduled for September 12-15, as well as other BuildingsXchanges in the works.
