ASID Kicks Off 4th Annual RealWorld DesignWeek

WASHINGTON—RealWorld DesignWeek, the annual nationwide mentoring program created by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), is scheduled to take place November 6-12, 2011.

RealWorld DesignWeek is the first national program aimed at educating future interior designers through in-person experience. The program is open to all members, free of charge, and pairs ASID student members with interior design professionals and ASID Industry Partners.

More than 1,000 ASID members participated in the nationwide interior design mentoring program in 2010. Michelle Beamer, Allied Member ASID, principal of MB Interiors, praised the program for its hands-on approach.

"I loved the idea of giving back to the design community by hosting a student for a day, but I never imagined how much I would learn in the process,” says Beamer. “Seeing design through someone else's eyes energized me and gave me new ideas.”

ASID member companies and individuals can visit www.asid.org/rwdw to sign up to host a student for one day in November. Examples of RealWorld DesignWeek activities include:

  • Attending client meetings, team meetings and vendor meetings
  • Visiting the design center
  • Touring past projects and construction sites
  • Exploring library materials
  • Reviewing bookkeeping basics
  • Reviewing client binders and/or contracts
  • Reviewing student's resume and/or portfolio
  • Demos of CAD, Revit, SketchUp or other software programs
