WHO ARE YOU?
I'm Pluto, a one of a kind sculptural, elliptical bench. I'm scaled for one, or I can be a cozy seat for two—so my size helps to define personal space in public facilities. Grouped together, me and my siblings can create intriguing arrangements.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was conceived in London, England, but born and raised in the good old USA (Grand Rapids, MI).
WHAT ONE WORD BEST DESCRIBES YOU?
HOW DO YOU DEFINE GOOD DESIGN?
I'll have to defer to my designer, Simon Pengelly, who says: "A good design must have 'soul,' be accessible, and have timeless appeal."
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Collaborating with creative architects and designers and having the opportunity to express myself by being tailored in leather, felt or in unexpected combinations.
HOW DO YOU LESSEN YOUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT?
I'm constructed of FSC-certified plywood and FSC-certified high-density fiberboard. My ballast is play sand that can be purchased locally, saving freight cost and energy.
WHAT DO YOU SEE WHEN YOU LOOK IN THE MIRROR?
Honestly? A radically distinctive bench! And because I am asymmetrical, I look slightly different from every angle.
IN WHAT TYPE OF INTERIOR ENVIRONMENT DO YOU MAKE THE GREATEST IMPACT?
I possess an extraordinary ability to attract people in public spaces. I'm comfortable in university common areas, libraries, lobbies, and informal meeting areas, to name a few.
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM JOB?
In this economy, every job is a dream. I recently received offers from Google and Skype to work in Silicon Valley, CA … and I'm taking both of them!
