BPS Facilities Selected to Pilot DOE Program

CHICAGO – Bentley Prince Street Inc., a Los Angeles-based manufacturer of award-winning commercial broadloom and carpet tile products, is honored to be only one of three industrial facilities in California selected to participate in the Department of Energy’s Superior Energy Performance Certification program.

The announcement was made at this year’s Greenbuild, where the company presented “The Truth About EPDs,” and feature milestones from its Mission Zero® journey.

Bentley Prince Street is working toward fulfilling its Mission Zero promise to eliminate any negative impact it has on the environment by the year 2020. In keeping with this promise and in response to an increase in greenwashing within the flooring industry, the Bentley Prince Street department of sustainability developed a presentation called “The Truth About EPDs” to help educate consumers and businesses on the importance of third-party certification for products.

“It’s a tremendous honor to have been selected by the Department of Energy to participate in this program because it means they recognize that we are walking the talk,” says Anthony Minite, president of Bentley Prince Street. “Our sustainability department and our associates deserve much credit for caring so much about our environmental impact, recognizing what we can do better and educating the entire company so that we can be more efficient. It’s truly a company-wide commitment.”

The intent of the Superior Energy Performance program is to provide industrial facilities with a road map for continual improvement in energy efficiency while maintaining competitiveness. The strategic goals of the program are to promote a culture of continuous improvements in energy efficiency and verify improvements through energy management practices. By participating in this demonstration project, Bentley Prince Street continues to lead the industry in transparency and accountability through third-party certifications.

“Educating oneself about even the basics of environmental claims and standards requires a lot of time and effort so we are happy to be able to provide a beginner education based on our own experiences for over a decade. We are always working to improve our efforts and are honored to be working with the Department of Energy on behalf of California,” says Kim Matsoukas, sustainability manager for Bentley Prince Street.

Since 1994, Bentley Prince Street has achieved significant milestones along the journey, including:

1996: Finalize Ecometrics format; Begin measuring water, energy, waste and material use; and, Create first GHG inventory using the WRI protocol.
1999: Installed a 100 kw solar array on-site (at the time, it's the largest privately owned array in the country).
