Event to Take Place on Nov. 2, First Day of NeoCon East
BALTIMORE — Breaking Boundaries is back. This event is hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Chapter (MAC) of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). The event takes place on the first day of the 9th annual National Exposition of Contract Furnishings Conference (NeoCon) held in Baltimore each year. It is the premier design exposition and conference on the East coast for the A&D community, with a special focus on showcasing products on the GSA schedule.
Breaking Boundaries has a new concept this year: "Design Changes Everything"
This breakfast event will take place Wed., Nov, 2 at the Visionary Arts Museum at 800 Key Highway, beginning at 7 a.m. on the opening day of the conference and will feature several esteemed presenters including the renowned author Roger Martin, who is a leader in design thinking and innovation. He recently wrote a book entitled "The Design of Business." In his book, Martin offers an answer to why companies have trouble coming up with innovative products and services and provides case studies for companies such as Proctor & Gamble and Cirque du Soleil.
In addition to Roger Martin, the Breaking Boundaries breakfast will include Keith Kutch from Stevenson University, Amy Brussellback from Proctor & Gamble, and Will Phillips from Under Armour. Each will share the power and impact of great design.
The Breaking Boundaries Committee is Co-Chaired by Kelly Ennis, Founding Principal of The Verve Partnership, a boutique interior architecture firm and Gregg Dekker, Workplace Consultant at Steelcase.
Bios on the Breaking Boundaries presenters:
Author, Roger L. Martin:
Martin is Dean of the Rotman School of Management and author of the recently released “Fixing the Game” - Bubbles, Crashes, and What Capitalism Can Learn from the NFL. This presentation, entitled Roger Martin Unplugged, will offer audience members a glance into his award-winning book, The Design of Business. In his book, Martin offers an answer to why companies have trouble coming up with innovative products and services and provides case studies for companies such as Proctor & Gamble and Cirque du Soleil.
Dean of the school of design at Stevenson University, Keith Kutch:
Kutch is a furniture designer and maker, teacher of design, and education administrator with a keen and abiding interest in improving the way that design-instruction is conceptualized, developed, and delivered. He operates under the assumption that the discipline of design can and will save the world. In other words, he’s a true believer in the power of the process of design to enlighten and guide us in improving the human condition. Currently, Kutch is establishing new design programs at Stevenson University in fashion design, which begins offering classes this fall, interior design beginning in 2012, and industrial design in 2013. Together with business communications, film and video, and visual communication design, these new design majors comprise the Stevenson University’s School of Design. Additionally, Kutch is designing the new space for the School of Design at the University’s campus in Owings Mills, Maryland.
Identity Director for Proctor & Gamble (P&G) Beauty, Amy Brusselback:
Brusselback leads the Design team for P&G Beauty, which includes a variety of designers from graphic to industrial, environmental to fashion. Her team is responsible for the worldwide visual identities and product design on such brands as Pantene, Wella, Nice ’n Easy, Herbal Essences, Olay, Max Factor, Cover Girl, Secret, Old Spice, Camay and Safeguard. Brusselback comes from a family of artists and craftsmen, however it took her a stint on the account side at a design firm before embracing design as a career. In her 15 years with Procter & Gamble, she has worked on a variety of businesses beyond her current scope including Always, Folgers, Jif, and Pringles. Amy piloted the role of Identity Director for P&G on Olay, and was a part of such successful launches as Regenerist and Daily Facials. She is best known for creating branding tools to ensure holistic brand application across media.
Under Armour Chief of Staff, Will Phillips:
Will Phillips, a former collegiate All-American lacrosse player, currently serves as the Chief of Staff to the Chief Operating Officer at Under Armour. In this role, Phillips supports the management of product design and development, as well as sourcing and distribution. Prior to this role, alongside key executives Scott Plank and Kip Fulks, Phillips ran Under Armour’s Green program which began in 2007. He worked to build green into the DNA of Under Armour and spearheaded the launch of UA GREEN including the brand message and product collection. Under Armour’s Catalyst collection – performance gear made from recycled plastic bottles – quickly grew to become a $20mm category for the company. Energy reduction programs, waste minimization efforts, green building projects, corporate green strategy and employee engagement fell under his purview. In 2010, Phillips led the design and construction of Under Armour’s Innovation Laboratory at the Under Armour Global Headquarters in Baltimore. He partnered with Gensler Architects and Turner Construction to build a state-of-the-art lab, establishing the ground work for future Brand design, prototypes and the ability to test new products and innovations.
A generous portion of Breaking Boundaries proceeds will benefit HealthCare for the Homeless and their “Housing First” program that is helping to eradicate homelessness by delivering quality healthcare as well as assisting the homeless community to get off the street permanently.
