ASID Announces 2011 Student Chapter Award Winners

Student members recognized for leadership and community service


WASHINGTON, D.C.—The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) recently announced the winners of the 2011 ASID Student Chapter Awards. ASID Student Chapter Awards are given to outstanding student members and chapters responsible for promoting the ASID student member experience as an enriching learning tool for future interior designers. This year’s awards include:

Community Service

Go Kids Design Project
ASID West Valley College Student Chapter

For their community service project, the ASID West Valley Student Chapter provided design services for Go Kids, a center-based early care provider for infants, pre-school and school-age children. Go Kids’ childcare services provide training and development opportunities for nearly 200 licensed and license-exempt home providers.

By proposing a fundraising idea that earned his chapter more than $800, leading workshops, overseeing portfolio reviews and attending all chapter officer meetings, Professor Tan exemplifies true dedication to design education and professional development.

ASID University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Student Chapter

”Indulge in Design” connects the university with local designers, professionals and businesses for fundraising support. The event attracted more than 70 people and earned the chapter a record $2,826, which was used to fund five student scholarships.

ASID West Valley College Student Chapter

As chapter president, ASID student member Marianne Bauer has dedicated her role as chapter leader to focusing on retention of board members through a yearly retreat and annual professional development workshops. Her leadership has helped foster a sense of community and balance among the committee, and creates an investment in future leaders.

ASID UCLA Extension Student Chapter website

The ASID UCLA Extension website has been, and continues to be, an effective and valuable means of communication for the community of students it serves. Providing exposure on both national and local levels, the website acts as a direct pipeline to the Los Angeles design community. Key features, such as a Tutor Profile page, an Alumni Gallery and a Scholarship section give visitors an interactive experience while students earn additional exposure.

Outstanding Chapter

ASID Madison Area Technical College Student Chapter

Guided by a strategic plan to retain and recruit members, the Madison Area Technical College student chapter successfully organized a number of events including an annual charity event, a food drive and a stress management workshop to benefit members.

Honorable Mention: ASID Interior Designers Institute Student Chapter

Working to support the student body and the surrounding community, the ASID Interior Designers Institute Student Chapter hosts many events encouraging professional and personal development. One of the chapter’s goals was to increase membership from 180 to over 200, which they surpassed beyond even their own expectations.

By serving the highest role as a student member within ASID, Janine worked tirelessly on educating area students on the merits of becoming an ASID student member. She has also helped connect graduating students with a local ASID Industry Partner that offers complimentary professional portraits for the students and their projects.

Honorable Mention: Mia Livas Porter, Student Member ASID, UCLA Extension

As student chapter president and student representative to the board, Mia’s extraordinary commitment to both the ASID Los Angeles Chapter and to the ASID UCLA Extension Student Chapter is exemplary.
