Project: Heery International Captures LEED Gold Certification

Architecture and design firm renovates own headquarters in Atlanta

Architecture and design firm Heery International recently announced the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification for the renovation of the firm’s 58,000-square-foot corporate headquarters in Atlanta, Ga.

In addition to providing new finishes and lighting throughout, Heery modernized the reception area, elevator lobby, break rooms, and conference and meeting spaces, all with an eye towards sustainability.

Some of the sustainable features include low-VOC materials that contain as much recycled content as possible. Designers specified that 85 percent of the wood used be sourced from a certified sustainably managed forest, and 50 percent of interior construction materials were extracted and manufactured within a radius of 500 miles. The firm’s new energy-efficient lighting systems use 27 percent less energy, resulting in estimated annual savings of $9,000. All construction waste throughout the project was recycled.

“Our renovation incorporated so much of what we promise our clients—beautiful design, spaces that promote productive teamwork, smart applications of technology and the clever use of sustainable materials,” says Heery President Bill Heitz. “It also showed off our integrated project delivery skills. From day one, we were united on all discipline fronts—design, engineering, and construction management. Our team did an excellent job working together to achieve optimal results.”

Another bonus is the savings the company expects to reap. “Our extra costs for targeting LEED certification as part of the renovation were a mere 1 percent of the total costs, or about $80,000,” says Heery Executive Associate Glenn Bellamy. “Those extra costs will be paid back in savings in two years, which represents a 14 percent return on investment.”

Heery International is a 900-person architecture, interior design, engineering, program management and construction management firm with offices nationwide. As an affiliated company of Parsons Brinckerhoff, one of the world’s leading professional services companies, Heery now operates as that firm’s U.S. buildings operating company.
